I don't hear those same threats from those who are using <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> and have a strong personal learning network (#PLN) established for themselves. Twitter offers a constant stream of news and information that is most relevant to me (primarily on the professional front, with some personal in there, as well).<\/p>\n<h2>PollEverywhere<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/polleverywhere.com\" target=\"_blank\">PollEverywhere<\/a> service provides an excellent way to both gather real-time input from students, as well as assess their understanding. I like how many ways there are for students to engage (tablet, phone, text\/SMS).<\/p>\n<h2>Remind<\/h2>\n<p>This video has all the reasons why I love using <a href=\"http:\/\/remind.com\" target=\"_blank\">Remind<\/a> to keep in touch with my students.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N5lWxFw6w_4?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>GoAnimate<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/goanimate.com\" target=\"_blank\">GoAnimate<\/a>\u00a0provides an easy way to build animated\u00a0videos. You choose a background, add characters and other objects, and include text and\/or audio. The video on Remind, above, was created using <a href=\"http:\/\/goanimate4schools.com\" target=\"_blank\">GoAnnimate4Schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Attendance2<\/h2>\n<p>This app does just what the title implies (takes attendance), but does a whole lot more. My favorite feature is the ability to call randomly on a student who is marked present for a given class session. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dave256apps.com\/attendance2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Attendance2<\/a>\u00a0helps me avoid calling on the same people, without realizing it.<\/p>\n<h2>Planbook<\/h2>\n<p>I like to ensure that each class session is somehow connected to my course learning outcomes. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hellmansoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Planbook<\/a> helps me organize all my handouts, PowerPoints, and links in one, central place. Plus, you can have it publish that information on a free site for your students to access, so they have information on what they may have missed, or for additional reinforcement of their learning in your classes.<\/p>\n<h2>Adobe Captivate<\/h2>\n<p>The two best products to use to create interactive, SCORM-compliant eLearning courses are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.articulate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Articulate's<\/a> eLearning Suite and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/captivate.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adobe Captivate<\/a>. The reason that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/captivate.html\" target=\"_blank\">Captivate<\/a> has made my list and not Articulate is purely because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/captivate.html\" target=\"_blank\">Captivate<\/a> is available on both the Mac and the PC.<\/p>\n<h2>SnagIt<\/h2>\n<p>Camtasia's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techsmith.com\/snagit.html\" target=\"_blank\">SnagIt<\/a> is also available on the Mac and PC and is the best screen shot tool I've ever used. I also spoke at the beginning of the <a href=\"http:\/\/5by5.tv\/mpu\/240\" target=\"_blank\">Mac Power Users episode #240<\/a> about how I use SnagIt for screencasting feedback during the grading process.<\/p>\n<h2>LiveScribe Smart Pens<\/h2>\n<p>I've had a love\/hate relationship with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&hvadid=3403338647&hvdev=c&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvpone=&hvpos=1t1&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvrand=12491741106706636518&index=aps&keywords=livescribe%20smartpen&linkCode=ur2&ref=pd_sl_339shwqno8_e&tag=innovatelearn-20&linkId=KMS3QS636RX4O6PS\" target=\"_blank\">LiveScribe smart pens<\/a>. On one hand, it is incredible that you can record what you're saying\/hearing\/writing and have it all be in sync with each other when you go to play it back. It's also a great method for <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/educational-technology\/micro-lectures-blended-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\">creating what I refer to as micro-lectures.<\/a>\u00a0The biggest downside, though, has been that they've changed their playback methods so many times over the years. Currently, a user has to play them back by dragging a PDF to a website, to enable playback (or play it via an app, but that doesn't work as well for sharing). If only MP4 was offered as an alternative publishing method; I would be &#8220;sold&#8221; for good.<\/p>\n<h2>Overcast<\/h2>\n<p>The tool that contributes more to my learning than any other these days is <a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Overcast<\/a>, which is one of many podcast &#8220;catchers&#8221;\/players. One thing I like about <a href=\"https:\/\/overcast.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\">Overcast<\/a> is the smart speed function, that skips over pauses in the recordings, but doesn't leave the speakers sounding like Alvin and the Chipmunks.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IH-VyUZKM_I?rel=0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jane Hart has invited our participation in the 2015 Top 100 Tools for Learning.
