There simply isn't time. I also don't want to confuse students by overdoing it with technology.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I want to be sure I allow enough time to properly reflect and strategize on how to best utilize a given tool. That's one of the reasons <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/educational-technology\/someday-maybe-technology-list\/\" target=\"_blank\">I find my someday\/maybe list for technology tools so beneficial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I keep <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/personal-knowledge-mastery\/pkmmodules\/\" target=\"_blank\">my PKM system<\/a> flowing with emerging tools to consider integrating into my teaching when\/if the timing is right.<\/p>\n<p>The possibilities are endless, when you find the right tool for the right situation.<\/p>\n<p>Consider that without collaborative technology, projects like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3hGSqqhhokE\" target=\"_blank\">this musical piece put on by musicians from all over the world<\/a> wouldn't be imaginable, let alone feasible.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) | Playing For Change | Song Around the World\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3hGSqqhhokE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Snapchat<\/h2>\n<p>If you haven't heard of Snapchat before, here's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speedofcreativity.org\/2016\/04\/02\/15-minute-snapchat-101-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">a good introduction to start with<\/a>&#8230; NPR describes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2016\/03\/29\/467091289\/how-teachers-are-using-snapchat\" target=\"_blank\">how teachers are using Snapchat<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/jilltxt.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jilll Walker Rettberg<\/a> gives this fabulous look at <a href=\"http:\/\/jilltxt.net\/?p=4408\" target=\"_blank\">how scholars can use Snapchat<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I'm tempted to dip my toe in the Snapchat world, a bit less from an educational perspective and more because so many marketers are using it to connect with consumers. These\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.inc.com\/john-rampton\/10-snapchat-brands-that-are-doing-it-right.html\" target=\"_blank\">ten Snapchat brands<\/a> are leveraging the platform in creative ways and I want to understand the ways to engage made possible through Snapchat.<\/p>\n<p>Not as much has been written about Snapchat in higher ed, though articles like <a href=\"http:\/\/ajjuliani.com\/the-complete-guide-to-snapchat-for-teachers-and-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\">this complete guide to Snapchat for parents and teachers<\/a> are applicable enough to our context to be of benefit.<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal published the best article I've seen on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/snapchat-101-learn-to-love-the-worlds-most-confusing-social-network-1452628322\" target=\"_blank\">using Snapchat in a personal\/individual context<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Slack<\/h2>\n<p>I've <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/educational-technology\/communication-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\">written previously about using Slack in my teaching<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/podcast\/edtech-2015s\/\" target=\"_blank\">have shared about it on the podcast<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zachwhalen.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Whalen<\/a> also provided <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zachwhalen.net\/posts\/notes-on-teaching-with-slack\/\" target=\"_blank\">his notes on teaching with Slack<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A friend recently suggested that I should have a Slack channel for Teaching in Higher Ed and give people a way to engage more as a community together.<\/p>\n<p>This would only make sense to me if there were enough members of the Teaching in Higher Ed community who were already up on <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slack<\/a> and looking for a way to chat more about teaching effectiveness and productivity.<\/p>\n<p><img data-opt-id=708391488  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2777\" src=\"https:\/\/images.coachingforleaders.com\/cb:ztCJ~31fd5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/slack.png\" alt=\"slack\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.coachingforleaders.com\/cb:ztCJ~31fd5\/w:300\/h:191\/q:mauto\/f:best\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/slack.png 300w, https:\/\/images.coachingforleaders.com\/cb:ztCJ~31fd5\/w:300\/h:191\/q:mauto\/f:best\/ig:avif\/dpr:2\/https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/slack.png 2x\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I wouldn't want to try to convince someone to get up and running on <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slack<\/a> just for this one purpose, but rather if a bunch of you were already using Slack for other things and would enjoy this additional means for communication on that platform.<\/p>\n<p>If you would be interested in joining a Teaching in Higher Ed Slack channel, let me know either in the comments, below, or by <a href=\"https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\">getting in touch through a private message<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[reminder]What emerging tools are you experimenting with, or considering giving a try in the next few months?[reminder]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I have shared previously, I don&#8217;t jump on every new tool when it first gets introduced.
