I was wrong. I ended up getting one last Friday, making me suspect that there won't ever be a semester without at least one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">TECHNIQUES<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Following are a few recommendations for newer faculty to help minimize the number of complaints from students. I would love to hear other ideas in the comments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div>Ensure clear grading guidelines are communicated in your syllabus in advance<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Direct the student to the appropriate pages of your syllabus where they can read more about yur grading policies<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Inform the student that you will not respond to future emails (or you wind up in a endless loop of back-and-forth)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Consider saving the first email you write of a response to a student, so you can copy\/paste it to other students who may have similar requests<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div>Let the student know where to direct concerns about the fairness or integrity of your grading (e.g. your Dean)<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><\/p>\n<div class='p_embed p_image_embed'>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/images.coachingforleaders.com\/cb:ztCJ~31fd5\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/chronicle.png.scaled1000.png\"><img data-opt-id=1308313978  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Chronicle\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/images.coachingforleaders.com\/cb:ztCJ~31fd5\/w:300\/h:205\/q:mauto\/f:best\/ig:avif\/https:\/\/teachinginhighered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/chronicle.png.scaled1000.png\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">LAST RESORT<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When all else fails, a good belly laugh is in order&#8230; Just when I thought that I was the only professor who experienced this with such regularity, I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/forums\/index.php\/topic,50122.60.html\">this thread<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/\">The Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a>. This is worth a read, if nothing else&#8230; to ensure you keep your sense of humor about the whole thing.
