I find myself first wanting to ask, \u201cHow much time do you have?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">This post will already take hours for me to write. I won\u2019t allow myself to consult my older Podcast Greats posts, lest I find myself changing my mind from their influence. It varies greatly, depending on whether I have a long drive in store that day, or a large amount of dishes to do or laundry to fold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">Higher Education<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">The majority of the higher education podcasts I listen to are related to teaching. I also enjoy those podcasts that can help me be more effective at pursuing my goals and just having more joy in my life, overall. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ygtpodcast.com\/\"><strong>You\u2019ve Got This with Dr. Katie Linder<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Such an uplifting an encouraging podcast &#8211; we can do this &#8211; with Katie\u2019s help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theblackgoatpodcast.com\/\"><strong>The Black Goat<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cThree psychologists talk about doing science.\u201d Great hosts (Sanjay Srivastava,\u00a0Alexa Tullett, and\u00a0Simine Vazire), talking through important issues in higher education (recent episodes were on finding a job in higher ed and starting out in a new job)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/news\/community\/edsurge-podcast\"><strong>EdSurge On Air<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; They find terrific guests to interview about what\u2019s happening in higher ed. I was even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edsurge.com\/news\/2018-02-06-forget-sage-on-the-stage-and-guide-on-the-side-the-challenges-of-teaching-in-the-trump-era\">on an episode in Feb 2018<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apmreports.org\/educate-podcast\">Educate: APM Reports<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Not restricted to higher ed, but high quality content about education at large<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/leadinglinespod.com\/\"><strong>Leading Lines<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cA podcast on educational technology, produced out of Vanderbilt Center for Teaching, the Vanderbilt Institute for Digital Learning, and Office of Scholarly Communications at the Vanderbilt University Library.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teachbetter.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Teach Better<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Doug and Edward (the hosts) find such gifted educators to inspire us toward better teaching. I enjoy the end of each episode, where the guest shares a failure that provided a great learning experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/teaforteaching.com\/\"><strong>Tea for Teaching<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Discovered this one very recently and have been enjoying it. Hosted by the individuals who lead the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at the State University of New York at Oswego<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/academigig.com\/\"><strong>AcademiGig with Drs. Katie Linder and Sara Langworthy<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; These two are so much fun to listen to and are encouraging for those exploring \u201cgigs\u201d outside of the traditional academic track. \u201cA podcast for current and aspiring academic creatives, freelancers, and entrepreneurs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/podcasts.flippedlearning.org\/askthefln\/\"><strong>Ask the Flipped Learning Network<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cA podcast for and about the Flipped Learning Network\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/podcast.contrafabulists.com\/\"><strong>The Contrafabulists Podcast<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; with Audrey Watters and Kin Lane &#8211; \u201cdiscussion of the latest technology (and politics of technology) news.\u201d They regularly challenge me to think more critically about educational technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/deeperlearning.ocde.us\/\"><strong>The Deeper Learning Podcast<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; There haven\u2019t been many episodes, but check out #1 for an incredible, lesser known court case that \u201cshattered many of the legal justifications for segregating public schools and laid the foundation for the famous Brown v. Board of Education decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/studentcaring.com\/\">Student Caring<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; A current colleague of mine (David) and a former one (Daniel) encourage us to thrive in our teaching and better serve our students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hybridpedagogy.org\/hybridpod\/\">HybridPod<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; \u201cExplores conversations of critical digital pedagogy, listening for ways to empower students and champion learning.\u201d It\u2019s been a year or so since I saw a new episode, but as soon as I do see one, I know it will be wonderful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">Context<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><em>I have become obsessed with the idea of context and how most of my failings as a teacher have involved my lack of it in some way. I try to regularly digest content that helps me expand my understanding of other people\u2019s contexts. I\u2019m thankful for friendships that help me do that, as well.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510312\/codeswitch\">Code Switch<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Conversations about race and identity<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crooked.com\/podcast-series\/pod-save-the-people\/\"><strong>Pod Save the People<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cOrganizer and activist DeRay McKesson explores news, culture, social justice, and politics through deep conversations with influencers and experts, and the weekly news with fellow activists Brittany Packnett and Sam Sinyangwe, and writer Clint Smith\u201d &#8211; this one goes to the top of my queue every time. Hear about the news from the context of black activists and influencers\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earhustlesq.com\/\">Ear Hustle<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Explores a context most of us are unfamiliar with\u2026 \u201cEar Hustle brings you the stories of life inside prison, shared and produced by those living it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">Politics and News<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><em>I\u2019m grateful that podcasts are available for shows that air in other media channels (such as television and radio), as I love the opportunity to listen on my own schedule. These podcasts help inform me on how to vote, how to be a better citizen, and how to engage in some forms of activism to try influence within my community and beyond. They also help me stay informed on what is happening in the business world. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510318\/up-first?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjqK58vSZ2wIVDcZkCh0gvgm0EAAYASAAEgKUAfD_BwE\">Up First from NPR<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Just ten minutes of news to start your day with<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510289\/planet-money\">Planet Money from NPR<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Fascinating look at economics<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/podcasts\/gabfest.html\"><strong>The Political Gabfest<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Three wonderful hosts take on the week\u2019s top three political news topics and then each make a recommendation at the end of the show (a little thing they call \u201cCocktail Chatter\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/481105292\/more-perfect\"><strong>Radiolab Presents: More Perfect<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Absolutely brilliant podcast about the Supreme Court. Haven\u2019t seen an episode since January 30, 2018 and am missing them so\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/pages\/help\/podcasting\">Democracy Now<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; A podcast of the Democracy Now television show. Independent, global news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-economist-babbage\/id508376907?mt=2\"><strong>The Economist: Babbage<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Podcast on science and technology. I listen when the episode topic is of interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/podcasts\/gist.html\">The Gist<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; This one has moved up in my episodes queue. Mike Pesca invites on a guest each time to explore a topic in depth. Then, he performs that he calls \u201cThe Spiel\u201d &#8211; which is typically a humorous look at a topic related to politics, the news, or something totally unexpected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligencesquared.com\/intelligence-squared-podcast\/\">Intelligence Squared U.S. Debates<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Smart debates about current topics<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/\"><strong>APM\u2019s Marketplace with Kai Ryssdal<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Great way to catch up with the news, using a lens oriented toward business and economics<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/crooked.com\/podcast-series\/pod-save-america\/\"><strong>Pod Save America<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cA political podcast for people not yet ready to give up or go insane\u2026 Breaks down the week\u2019s news and helps people figure out what matters and how to help.\u201d Hosted by three individuals who worked for the Obama administration: Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/wait-wait-dont-tell-me\/\">Wait Wait\u2026 Don\u2019t Tell Me!<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Very funny game show done weekly to keep us up on the important and just plain bizarre news. I often skip the two middle segments: One where you try to figure out which story of three is the one that really happened and one with a celebrity guest where they quiz them on random stuff. I enjoy those parts, but there\u2019s only so much podcast listening that\u2019s available to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/undertheinfluence\"><strong>Under the Influence from CBC Radio with Terry O\u2019Reilly<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Fascinating stories about marketing. I regularly find episodes that relate to the classes I teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">Social Sciences<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><em>My undergraduate degree was in social sciences and I still quite enjoy learning more in this discipline. In many ways, all the podcasts I listen to probably belong in this category. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/510308\/hidden-brain?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjoHix4ua2wIVE9VkCh0mFwveEAAYASAAEgLYTvD_BwE\"><strong>Hidden Brain<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cShankar Vedantam uses science and storytelling to reveal the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior, and shape our choices and direct our relationships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisamericanlife.org\/\"><strong>This American Life<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; It was hard to know where to classify this one &#8211; It is a little bit of everything and some of the best storytelling I\u2019ve ever encountered<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/verybadwizards.fireside.fm\/\"><strong>Very Bad Wizards with Tamler Sommers and David Pizarro<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201cA philosopher and psychologist ponder human morality (warning: they self admittedly have \u201ca market inability to distinguish sacred from profane\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revisionisthistory.com\/\"><strong>Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Each episode goes\u00a0&#8220;back and reinterprets something from the past: an event, a person, an idea. Something overlooked. In the remaining three weeks, Dave interviews fabulous guests that challenge us to keep developing ourselves as leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/essentialcomm.com\/podcast\/\"><strong>The Look and Sound of Leadership with Tom Henschel<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Wish it came out even more often &#8211; great advice for leaders in every episode<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/01\/podcast-women-at-work\">Women at Work from Harvard Business Review<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Only lasted for four episodes &#8211; but well worth a listen &#8211; excellent podcast<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/leadtowin\/\"><strong>Lead to Win with Michael Hyatt<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Solid leadership advice with effective storytelling throughout<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/read\/ted-podcasts\/worklife\">WorkLife with Adam Grant<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Only recently started listening and am enjoying every episode<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/01\/podcast-ideacast\">HBR IdeaCast<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; Weekly podcast \u201cfeaturing the leading thinkers in business and management\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\">Productivity and Personal Effectiveness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><em>Another unsurprising area of interest is in productivity. My passion for technology started at that organization &#8211; and hasn\u2019t ended. I was even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relay.fm\/mpu\/240\">on an episode back in 2015<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gimletmedia.com\/reply-all\"><strong>Reply All<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; \u201c\u2018A podcast about the internet\u2019 what is actually an unfailingly original exploration of modern life and how to survive it.\u201d &#8211; The Guardian<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: centurygothic;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnycstudios.org\/shows\/radiolab\">RadioLab<\/a> <\/strong>&#8211; I wish they were my science teachers in my younger days.
